This answer is not smart or revelatory -- just the obvious. RUSS & DAUGHTERS. Why go anywhere else? Their smoked white fish salad would be delicious schmeared on the sidewalk, let alone on a bialy with capers, onion and a squeeze of lime. If the line stresses you out, take a number and head around the corner to eat the halvah ice cream at the cafe with a shot of vodka. It's the holidays, after all.

The freshly sliced King Salmon at Dean & Deluca is better than any other in the city. Its definitely a hidden secret, so I don't let the word out. Russ & Daughters is excellent, but the buttery texture and flavoring of this baby is much better.

That's high praise if you're saying its better than R&D. I will try it out next time I'm here and see if I agree ;)
