I'm fairly certain I'm preaching to the choir here, but this place is straight up magical. The duck is obviously the star of their menu. So grab the right people, aka people that know how to take advantage of their BYOB policy and go for it. I haven't been to their location in Midtown, it may have a different vibe. I've been to the one on Mott Street numerous times and it has always been a total treasure for a large party dinner.

Yes I much prefer the Mott street location over their midtown one. They charge a corkage fee uptown if I recall correctly, and I like the location of Mott better right in the heart of chinatown.

I especially love that you can drink several bottles of wine with a group of friends and walked out of here stuffed spending only $20-30 a piece. +1 for Peking Duck

Known as the "worst kept secret in midtown" and my go to place if i find myself with a large party. Centrally located, cheap, and completely sans attitude. Be prepared to wait but their are plenty of large round tables ready to accomodate you, your friends, and all the delicious spicy things you can order.

As long as you stick to the "Szechuan" section of the menu, you really cant go wrong

This is for the "Steakhouse" that's upstairs. I've done a bunch of last minute dinners here. Here's the upside: Great prices on prix fixe menus, food is consistently good and since they tend to cater towards the early bird crowd showing up with 6 people at 8:00 is almost never an issue. Downsides: You're eating in a grocery store, and the service is not great (but you can tell that they try) They don't have a great wine selection, although they make up for it by having a $5 corkage fee. It's tricky to find places for last minute parties, but this is definitely a place to consider.

Does this place have any upside as far as bringing a group of friends? It sounds interesting but my one concern is people would feel strange dining above a grocery store.

The cafe/steakhouse is located upstairs and over looks the street, they do a good job of blocking it off from the store. It's pretty easy to forget that you're in a grocery store. As a bonus, I like the convenience of finishing dinner and thinking "I need eggs" and having them be right there.
