Somtum Der was awarded last year with a star for their authentic northern Thai dishes. The flavors are almost unapologetically bold (spicy food lovers rejoice), think pok pok without having to travel all the way to Red Hook. Try the papaya salad, grilled pork or fried chicken thigh for starters and get a couple more dishes to share amongst the table. They also have a pretty solid lunch special during the day! At it's price point, Somtum Der is a go to spot for me whenever I'm in the area.

It is hard for a restaurant of this caliber to be a "value". Luckily for us, Chef Ripert offers a three course menu for $49 dollars. It is available in the lounge during lunch hours only but a portion of the pricetag is donated to City Harvest. I have gone this route many times at the bar and have never been disappointed. The salmon served for the second course is simply put the best rendition of the fish that I have ever tasted. An upside for this "value" deal is that each course has multiple choices. This is the perfect menu if you want to enjoy the great food of Le Bernardin but don't want to wait for an occasion to do so.

Hands down, I think the absolute best Michelin value in the city is the Lunch Tasting at Bouley. Everything is so light and delicate while indulgent and satisfying, at the same time. They offer five courses (with choices) starting at $55. The porcini flan with Golden Princess crab in black truffle dashi is one of my favorites. Wine pairing is an additional $55 - it hits most of the key regions and is totally worth it. Lunch at Bouley is kind of the perfect way to enjoy a quieter afternoon in Tribeca.

Michelin star restaurants come in many different varieties now a days, especially in NYC. The old idea of white table cloths and tweezer food being the only one's to get a michelin star is just no longer the case. Just in the last year though, Matt & Ann have been able to do something amazing by earning a Michelin star with a traditional Thai food restaurant. The space is exactly what it needs to be and the food is nothing short of aggressively flavorful. No Tasting menus here, just small plates, large plates and dishes off of their charcoal grill, which should NEVER be overlooked. There are plenty of options here too, with different combinations of dishes and flavors, creating a different experience every time that won't cost you a month's rent check.

I personally love Michelin-starred restaurants that offer abbreviated / more affordable options such as a prix fix lunch. It gives everyone the opportunity to either test the water for dinner, or simply makes the restaurant universally attainable. I think Del Posto and Jean~Georges pull this magic trick off the best. However, M. Wells Steakhouse in my hood is one of the greatest values both for excellent food and service. It doesn't hurt that they have a fair corkage policy as well.

When you consider that classic restaurants like Peter Luger and Minetta Tavern are the only other steakhouses in NYC with a michelin-star it's a pretty strong testament to M. Wells. It might be my favorite steakhouse in the city!

I don't think many starred restaurants give value. Great meals, yes; but I don't know about great "values." Junoon has always been a solid value to me, as I don't think their prices are too high, and the portions are decent. Vikas Khanna has definitely put a lot into this place when it opened.! I highly recommend getting the chef's tasting; one regular and one vegetarian. You'll get to see and taste both menus. Solid wine selection, great service, and I am a true fan of the decor (especially the spice room in the basement!). If you aren't big on Indian food, the chef's menu won't detour you much, as it is not like any other Indian you have ever had! A glass or two of wine and a light dinner will probably only run you around $35-50pp. Enjoy!

Betony is a rare spot in New York. It's a place where everything is good, start to finish. It's somehow become my home away from home this past year and I feel very fortunate that that is the case. From their bar snacks (right now it's these pretzel "sheets" that taste like someone peeled the exterior off of the best pretzel you've ever had in your life and pressed it until it merged into a giant square...ugh, so good) to their tasting menu- everything is on point. They do a shortened lunch menu that is a steal at $42. Specifically, I love their fried pickles (I'm a very classy broad), and I had a tagliatelle here once that I could eat every day. Drinks are inventive but you can trust them with the classics as well. The space itself is gorgeous as well. At this point I just sound like a Madam. Just go. It'll be great.

Hands down the best tacos in NYC. But, it goes further. The guacamole is perfect, great acid balance and not tarted up, simple and perfect. For non-taco options, all the usual suspect proteins are well represented and delicious; the cooking is serious, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. The tacos themselves are far more interesting that 99% of the other options in the City, both in planning and execution. Wash all this down with one of the many tasty cocktails; I recommend the obvious, margaritas. Have some fun and go a bit off menu and ask for the basic margarita with a different tequila each round, they are well made and it will give you the chance to discover why we need so many tequilas! My only real complaint? The acoustics are a bit loud....

Tucked behind a sliding door at the back of Greenpoint's happening craft beer bar Torst, is a 16 seat restaurant offering a 125$ five-course tasting with optional beer pairings for an additional 55$. Daniel Burns is chef of Michelin-starred Luksus and one of the owners of Torst, and he's a hell of a cook. His old boss, Rene Redzepi, wrote a very flattering introduction to Daniel's first cookbook, which he had just received his copy of and was smitten with excitement to share on the night I was in to dine. From dark nordic breads to elegant cured fish preparations and the most interesting fennel puree I've ever had, Daniel Burns' menu is beautiful, daring, and, for me, dotted throughout with flavors and textures not considered before.

The menu is of the new ilk of tasting menus in which the first of the courses is a series of amuses, and immaculate produce takes center stage. At Stone Barns, those amuses run 18 deep, 22 for VIP. At Luksus, the "Snacks" course is a half dozen or more carefully constructed bites followed by several somewhat larger plates. The beer pairings are refreshed throughout the courses, and I came in hungry and left feeling right. So, when you hear five courses, remember that it could claim to be a dozen courses, but "Snacks" makes more sense, and, especially with the beer pairings, you will be sated completely. For the price, it's unquestionably a great deal for Michelin-starred food. But at Luksus, you get to sit in a room with four counter seats and six two-tops and watch and listen to the chef as you are wowed through a flurry of snacks and plates that come at you from a different perspective than the European and Asian-centric cuisine that dominate much of New York dining. More than a clear value, it's a must try.

Every time we're here the menu is consistently delicious and creative. It's an excellent night out without the pretentiousness that comes along with a lot of Michelin-starred places. You can actually relax and enjoy yourself and your company while still being served in quality fashion.

If you haven't heard, EMP has a bar. Although walking-in without at least a call to the Mâitre d' ahead of time might not be advised, it's possible. Although nothing in this restaurant is really inexpensive, it's worth it. You don't necessarily need to commit to the whole shebang that is a $295/pp tasting if you don't want to, and just by having a drink you may have a chance to get taken to the kitchen for a bite of taffy. As good as fresh candy on a stick may be, the view of the mechanism behind this mother of pearl watch face might be even more enjoyable.

Put on your best outfit, and go have a glass of Champagne, with a bite of however they're serving caviar that evening. Load up on dollar dumplings before, or head to Boilermaker for a burger after if you must, but every single time I revolve through those doors I have *the most* fun. If nothing else, in the restroom, you have a good chance of being a character in the play that is the best meal of someone else's life.

Chef Gunnar Gíslason has a knack for taking humble ingredients, such as beef heart, and elevating them into something special. His menu is surprisingly flavorful and clean tasting. He is also very approachable and it is not unusual to see him out in the dining room serving food to his guests. There are à la carte and tasting menu options that might seem expensive, at a glance. However, they are inclusive of service. The wine and beer list is a pretty good reason to check it out, as well.
