I'm always surprised that Tocqueville doesn't get more love in the NYC dining scene. It's not exactly reinventing culinary norms like some more heralded spots, but it executes seasonal haute cuisine consistently and presents service on par if not better than some of the Daniel's and Per Se's of the world, at a (relative) fraction of what you would be paying at those spots.

The Uni Carbonara is certainly the show stopper on the menu, and the calling card of the restaurant, but I still dream about a cream-less cauliflower soup I had as an amouse a few years ago, and I experienced one of the more flawlessly executed butter-poached lobster's I've ever had (paired beautifully with sunchokes, caramelized apples, and baby leeks) on a visit last spring. A visit during truffle season will almost certainly end with a over-the-top amount of truffles being shaved over a plate of decadently buttery risotto or some other fitting dish.

Their beverage director, Roger Dagorn, is a Certified Master Sommelier and could not be friendlier or more excited to de-mystify the wine list. I've done pairings twice with their tasting menu and found his recommendation spot on both times.

I see available times there almost every time I have OpenTable open, and am consistently sorely tempted to go back. The owners of Tocqueville also own 15 East, which is another criminally underrated restaurant. If you are searching for a last minute romantic evening, you could do a lot worse than either of them.

Thank you for getting this list started... I think it will come in quite handy when it gets more filled out. This was a great rec by the way I really hadn't heard much about tocqueville.
