Sure, I could talk about Taverna Kykclades, the greek fish juggernaut that took their domination of the Astoria food scene and opened their second location across the street from Stuytown. Their fish is definitely outstanding. But for my money, the best Greek in the city, and possibly everywhere in the world outside Greece, is at Gregory's.
First of all, it's hard to overstate the atmosphere of the place. A relatively non-descript hole in the wall off the beaten path, there are generally two larger greek men smoking cigarettes out on the street, if you're looking for a (not at all helpful) landmark. inside feels like you've stepped into a greek fishing shack - greek flags, ship wheels, miniature ships, nets, and so on are strewn all around, and a rotating group of regulars can generally be found at a few of the tables in the relatively small dining room. The servers and other guests have been genuinely interested in how I'm doing and how I'm enjoying the food every single time I've gone. It feels warm and wonderful just sitting and talking inside.
And the food! I have yet to have an item that didn't have me close my eyes with delight. Charred Peppers stuffed with creamy cheese, tender grilled octopus, herbed zucchini fritters, roasted lemon potatoes. Everything is served with a good amount of lemons and love. Somehow even the baseline "pita and dips" platter is a standout.
And then comes the fish. The smelts, lightly battered, crunch so pleasingly that you could mistake the experience for eating nachos or pork rinds. The salt cod with skordalia (a mashed potato and raw garlic dip) is an insane (and delicious) burst of flavor. The whiting flakes perfectly as you cut into it, and yields to your tongue as you close your mouth.
But don't take my word for it! The regulars at Gregory's will almost certainly let you know what "can't miss" dish you didn't order, and will be happy to order it for you if not offer you a bite of it off of their table. It's truly a remarkable spot. I feel very lucky to have it in my neighborhood.
