Black Seed Bagels is a unique spot to try out on the LES. They are making Montreal style bagels that are oven fired and come out fresh to order. There is nothing like a bagels from the over to satisfy your hunger. They have a ton of unique toppings and have also ventured into lunch options. Recently they have been partnering with local chefs to create unique limited edition sandwiches on their bagels. Highly recommended even for those who are strictly New York Bagel people. Pictured is a Sesame Seed Bagel topped with Ricotta Cheese, Honey and Apple Slices.

A little out of the way, Tompkins Square Bagels is definitely worth the walk. Every bagel is hand-rolled, kettle-boiled and baked on the premises (yes, this is their slogan). But, their major selling point is their uniquely flavored cream cheese options. Chipotle avocado, cookie dough, birthday cake and apple cinnamon are a few of the many creative options available to top your bagel. Be warned, the birthday cake and cookie dough flavors are extremely sweet. In addition to bagels, Tompkins Square offers specialty sandwiches. I especially love the mac and cheese bagel and the pizza bagel. Both are utterly divine. Everything is fairly priced, but keep in mind that the establishment is cash only.

Newly renovated and always delicious, Bagel Bob's is my absolute favorite bagel place in the city. A bagel and cream cheese runs you about $2.40, give or take a few cents. Flash your NYU ID for an extra 20 cents off your purchase. On Mondays, after 4pm, Bagel Bob's discounts all their bagels to 45 cents. That's a dozen bagels for under $6. But, finding a cheap, yummy bagel isn't the only reason I continue to go back to Bagel Bob's each week. Rather, it's the friendly service. The guys behind the counter never fail to indulge their customers in flattery and genuine kindness. Oh, and did I mention Amanda Seyfried is a loyal customer?

They aren’t bagels and if you aren’t from NYC/the Metropolitan area and/or a Jew, than most likely this love child of the English muffin and bagel is a mystery. There is only one place to find the true bialy and after a 5 month hiatus and a facelift for this 80 year old institution, the bialy is back. Kossar's Bagels & Bialys do have fresh bagels, I have yet to try them but they do look great. They now have included a counter for ordering specialty sandwiches and schmeared bagels and bialys (the schmear is only a $1-$1.50 extra on top of the price of your bread of choice). The only down side is each bagel and regular bialy are $1 each, no discount for a dozen and no baker’s dozen. For the true Lower East Side experience start by grabbing a dozen bialys at Kossar’s, go half a block west to the Pickle Guys, up to Houston for Russ & Daughters then end your walk around 1 block east with a mouth filling sandwich at Katz’s Deli.

I'm always amazed hearing about these places that have been around forever. I've done Russ & Daughters and Katz, so I'll give this a whirl to complete the trifecta!

I love going to Leo's on Sunday morning for fresh bagels and egg sandwiches. There can be a bit of a line, but it's worth the wait. A definitely must try for anyone living in lower Manhattan!
