I tend to prefer dining at the bar instead of the dining room in general, but nowhere makes me happier to do so than Minetta Tavern. The bartenders here are sharp and know how to make a mean drink while establishing fun rapport. The feeling in this space is warm and cozy and while space can get crowded if it's busy on a weekend night (and it will be), finally securing a seat at the bar feels rewarding. For me, the excitement stems from the building expectation of an ice cold martini or Manhattan-- depending on the season-- and you know I'm gonna be diving into some steak. The meat here is insanely good and the black label burger made from dry aged beef triggers a long-lost primal instinct. And, to finish your meal they always have a great selection of sipping rums, tequilas and whiskeys. Check out the Capovilla Rhum Rhum (Liberation rum, their 10 year style) made from the famous Italian distiller Capovilla for a Rhum Agricole style like none other. If you want to drink it as the distiller would, ask for one ice cube and a lime twist. Sit back, sip, digest and smile.

I confess, I love sitting at the bar. The rules have changed at Blue Hill at Stone Barns but a few years back I drove up to Tarrytown to walk in & grab a seat at the bar for the tasting menu and I am so glad that I did. As a working chef, making a reservation and sticking to it is virtually impossible when 80 hours a week is spent inside your own kitchen. I became accustomed to just walking into any great restaurant I pleased and getting a seat where I could. I was never turned down, by the way. I love the bar because I can watch service, be entertained by the bartender or other guests and really get a cool feel for any given space.
I guess I consider myself a "foodie" if the term means that I love the creative ingenuity of great chefs both known and unknown, and not in the trendy jump on that bandwagon kind of way.
When we sat for this 8 course tasting menu that turned out to be more like 16 courses, they asked us what we liked and didn't like and if we had allergies, were vegetarians, etc. So I had to just go for it & say "bring it on, don't hold back on anything." And I was left with one of the most memorable meals of a lifetime. At The Bar.

Stone Barns was and likely will remain one of the best dining experiences of my life. Fascinating that you could do the full tasting at the bar, had no idea.

In restaurants where getting a reservation is next to impossible, a seat at the bar can be a sure-fire way to enjoy undeniably FANTASTIC food without having to mind your "P's and Q's". The bar staff at Eleven Madison Park is professional, knowledgable, and quite a bit of fun. They make a mean cocktail and if your preferences swing towards wine they can dispatch one of their phenomenal sommeliers. I love the food at GT but sometimes (ok most of the time) I'm not in the mood for full blown fine dining and service elements being in the forefront. Sitting int he bar room, especially at the bar, gets you the best of both worlds :p

if you want to eat at the bar then I strongly suggest you go early, Luis the bartender has been taking care of guests for almost as long as the restaurant has been open. Great vibe, service, and food makes this a go to place if you are in midtown for lunch or dinner
