I love The Spotted Pig in general, but their burger is one of the most well regarded in the city by all the burger lovers I know. It's usually on most top 10 NYC burger lists. It's a half pound patty of grilled perfection, and somewhat surprisingly uses Roquefort cheese. The Roquefort is what makes this so uniquely great though, in addition to their fresh house-baked buns.

Peter Luger's is best known for their world-famous porterhouse, but you can get a lunch-time burger (before 3:45pm) that's composed of amazing dry-aged beef. There is nothing overdone about this burger; there's no egg, pork belly, or other usual suspects burger places use to cheat. It's just amazing beef, with an option for cheddar cheese and thick-sliced bacon. It's worth a lunch-time trek out to BK to experience this if you are a burger lover.

The black label burger at Minetta Tavern is legendary. When talking to other New Yorkers this is probably the burger I hear mentioned the most among the best in the city. It's $28 dollars, but it's one of the few burgers in the city that's worth going out of your way for. Definitely a must to try if you're a burger lover.

Had heard lots about "One of the best burgers in the city" but was kind of disappointed when it lacked flavor, had a soggy bun and was really pricey. Though I must say, the fries were on point and the place really gives you that old school New York vibe!

The "Piggie" at Daniel Boulud's gastropub DBGB is one of the best burgers I've ever had. The patty is cooked perfectly. It's topped with pulled pork and a jalapeno that gives it an awesome kick, to go along with cheddar bun that makes the burger work so well top to bottom. I haven't had their other two options, the "Yankee" and the "Frenchie", but I want to go back for more.

This place has been all the rage on the west coast for a long time, and they opened their first location in NYC only in the last couple years. I've been to Umami 5-6 times, and it is among the most consistently great burgers in the city. The patties have a melt-in-your-mouth juiciness to them, and the buns are toasted perfectly. The manly and truffle burgers are my favorites.

I generally think chicken burgers are underrated.

My friend shrugged his shoulder at it but once he took a bite, I had to order another one.

This is a succulent, juicy, light burger. Well seasoned. It's served with a chicken skin chicharron and a truffle cream sauce.

I often feel 'truffles' can be a cop-out to add an element of luxury to a dish to justify a price point and increase perceived value. Having said that, the truffle sauce works very well with this burger that's been on and off the menu at the Nomad for a while.

Try one, you won't regret it.

Although April Bloomfield's first restaurant, The Spotted Pig, is lauded for many dishes, its rightfully the burger, dripping with roquefort and beef fat, that has become the pig's most iconic item. At her newest restaurant, Salvation Burger, Bloomfield drills down on what made her name, and showcases the deep love and affection she has for the burger medium. On a recent trip, I tried out a fiercely garlicky burger with ramp butter, caramelized red onions, and taleggio cheese (pictured) where the burger acted as a canvas rather than the star player that beef of this quality and attention to detail merits - by no means a bad thing, but rather a showcase of what is possible when a chef of this caliber focuses on deeply seasonal iterations of a burger that works on its own. On the other end of the spectrum lies the classic burger, which is essentially the best possible version of a big mac. Two patties, special sauce, gooey yellow cheese, and superb pickles all serve to enhance the flavor of the meat rather than stealing its spotlight. On both, the bun is impossibly golden, with a soft yet firm texture that creates a truly excellent mouthfeel, and stands up admirably to the juicy patty. Both options rank among my favorite gourmet burgers in the city. $25 is a steep price to pay for a burger but I never leave with an ounce of buyer's remorse. Highly Recommend.

There is a great no-longer hole-in-the-wall vegetarian burger joint called Superiority Burger in East Village and it's definitely worth the try. We had a great chicory salad, a sloppy Dave (#sloppyjoe) and the Superiority burger. So much fun, so satisfying.

When you eat a regular burger, you know it's just ground meat, may it be beef, lamb or whatever other animal. However, vegetarian burgers often combine many grains and legumes and create something new, greater than the sum of its parts. Superiority burger's texture was very unique to me. It felt like an emulsion though with a crispy crust. Very moist in the middle, somewhat disintegrating easily. It comes with muenster cheese, tomato and lettuce.

Will you feel superior after you eat a vegan burger? Yes, very likely.

Delmonico's is famously known to be the first restaurant in America. Established in 1837, this place has become a historic landmark with a gorgeous interior and a juicy burger. Lunchtime is really the best time to try and visit the famed spot, as they're almost always empty around 12:30-1pm. For dessert, I highly recommend the Baked Alaska, as the dessert was created here in 1876 to celebrate the US purchase of Alaska from Russia. It's important to note that the interior of the restaurant is very high-end, and I would recommend dressing up in more than jeans and a t-shirt to eat here.

Old Homestead claims to serve four food groups: beef, beef, beef and beef. It shouldn't be surprising then that they serve a $43 kobe beef burger that at 20 oz. is more sized like a steak than a hamburger. If you can handle that much beef, and stomach the price point, it's phenomenal. It's obviously not a burger you're going to eat with regularity, but I'd rank among it the top 3 I've ever had.
